Abstract

The title of Manuel Villa Issa’s book is a
provocation, and an invitation to turn our
attention towards the agricultural and livestock
production sector. In spite of its undeniable strategic
importance for any society, in our country it has
remained for decades in a situation of permanent
deterioration, reflected in its chronic inability to
respond productively, which has had high costs for
society.
The sector’s old crisis has entailed the loss of the
ability to produce foods that the population demands,
as was happening until the latter 1970s, when, in fact,
agricultural and livestock exports were an important
source of currency that allowed covering the needs
that the start of the industrialization process in the
country required. Since the end of the seventies and
until today, this ability has been steadily deteriorating,
going from a period of self-sufficiency to food
dependency of over 30%. Villa Issa points out that
México produces 1.7% of the world’s agricultural and
livestock production; however, it imports 4.5% of
total food imported throughout the globe.
