Three markets from the Mexican Network of Tianguis and Organic Markets (Red Mexicana de Tianguis y Mercados Orgánicos, redac) were selected, with the objective of identifying the setting where small-scale producers are unfolding, based on aspects such as economic situation, production methods, perspective on organic certification, and on the possible benefits of becoming part of an organic market. A study was carried out through the application of 31 structured surveys with producers and three semi-structured interviews with the coordinators of those tianguis. For more than 80 % of producers the sale of organic products is profitable and represents their main source of income. In addition, it is a food supply since part of the production is destined to auto-consumption. Most of the survey respondents do not require financial backing because they own their production spaces, produce their own inputs, maintain their food sovereignty by deciding what and how much to produce, and consider that the price they receive for their production is fair. It is concluded that the integration of small-scale producers to the tianguis and markets in the redac is favorable by giving them a stable place for the commercialization of products recognized as organic and by generating economic, social and cultural sustainability for them.
