Analyzing the relationships between society and nature allows us to understand the processes that occur within socio-ecological systems and thus provide elements for more sustainable management. This paper aims to estimate in a quantitatively way the relationship between society and nature of the mezcal socio-ecosystem in Querendaro region, Michoacán, using the socio-rural metabolism aproach, as well as collaborative work with local actors and applying semi-structured interviews and a survey. We found that conservation and diversification strategies of traditional socio-rural metabolisms are key to improve maintenance and balance between the basic dimensions of sustainability; meanwhile is developing a tendence towards the strengthening of specialized and technified socio rural metabolisms for the production of mezcal, which are commonly associated with the increase of negative externalities that fall on the socio-ecosystems that provide natural resources and the local biocultural knowledge.
