Abstract

Feminist thought has been expressed, in one or another way, since
twelfth-century; its development has peculiarities in every
geographical region. Gaining the right to vote for women was one
of the earlier achievements of feminist movement. Gender as an
analytical category in the social science emerged in Latin America
in the seventies. Since then, there has been a huge advancement in
feminist theorizing; this theorization has been complex and, at
times, disorderly and has always sought to engage with and
reinterpret the foundations of the theoretical frameworks it coexists
with and, at times, draws from. In this essay a synthesis of feminist
theorizing is made, framing it in three phases which locate the
theoretical development of gender applying it in Mesoamerica. It
concludes, finally, offering some theoretical elements for the
analysis of gender transformations through time and space.
