Abstract

In the face of the globalized agri-food model, characterized by long distribution chains and ultra-processed products, short marketing circuits (SMCs) offer an alternative for promoting sustainable and equitable agri-food systems. In the Sierra Nevada of Puebla, the implementation of local, healthy, and specialty agricultural products such as blue corn and berries through direct sales or reduced intermediation is particularly relevant. The objective was to analyze the structure and functioning of these commercial circuits to propose a typology. A mixed methodology was used, involving community workshops, direct observation, and surveys of 165 producers of these agri-food products in three communities: Ozolco, Tianguizolco, and Buenavista. The results show that SMCs distribute fresh and processed products, both artisanal and semi-industrial, with significant participation of women, youth, Indigenous people, returning migrants, and rural families. Direct sales circuits with minimal intermediation were identified, linking producers with urban markets, specialty niches, collectors, and consumers. Also, on-farm commercial schemes, home delivery, traditional cuisines, agritourism, digital platforms, and bartering, maintaining a strong territorial and social connection. Their operation is based on sales strategies, organizational structures, and access to financing. Based on these findings, a typology of commercial circuits is proposed: urban artisanal, healthy specialty, and expanding commercial, to recognize their complexity and impacts. In conclusion, the CCCs for blue corn and berries strengthen economic well-being, cultural identity, food security, and environmental sustainability, requiring differentiated policies and multi-scale government support for their consolidation.

He holds a degree in Agroindustrial Engineering and a Master's degree in Agribusiness and International Trade from the National University of Huancavelica (Perú), where he is currently pursuing a PhD in Agricultural Sciences. His research focuses on agroindustrial technology, food safety, and security. He has conducted applied studies on agribusiness and short marketing channels linked to Andean crops such as purple corn (Kculli variety) and berries. In the case of purple corn, he has analyzed the bioactive potential of its anthocyanins, which is widely consumed in traditional beverages and dishes such as chicha, mazamorra, and tamales. He has also documented agricultural practices and the impact of agrochemical use in rural areas of Lima, Arequipa, Cajamarca, and Huánuco. Regarding berries, he is also conducting studies due to the growing importance of their nutraceutical properties in international markets. The comparative experience between agri-food systems in Perú and México has allowed us to establish parallels between the agroecological conditions of the Andean region of Perú and the Sierra Nevada of Puebla, contributing to the analysis of peasant marketing strategies in territories with high ecological and biocultural diversity.
