“WOMEN TO POULTRY AND MEN TO LIVESTOCK”: GENDER CONSTRUCTIONS IN RURAL POULTRY FARMING

Women have traditionally been responsible for caring for small animals in small-scale livestock farming, primarily poultry, goats, and sheep. This phenomenon has been explained by the species' size, their "easy" handling, and low investment. However, these interpretations must be analyzed from the perspective of social actors and from a feminist perspective, in order to understand the reasons that influence the delimitation and ownership of animals. The objective of this study was to identify and analyze, from a feminist perspective, the social constructs surrounding poultry farming in rural communities in Hidalgo, Mexico. Based on a mixed methodological strategy, 41 family production units with "farm" animals were identified, 95% of which had birds. Twenty-nine women (74.35%) and 10 men (25.64%) owners of the resource were interviewed. Women (76%) and men (80%) considered that poultry belonged more to women, due to gender roles and the sexual division of labor, as well as their economic value. Poultry are considered marginal, feminized animals, relegated to domestic spaces, linked to subsistence, and undervalued, which limits their veterinary care. The feminist perspective is fundamental to the study of livestock farming, as it broadens the categories of analysis and allows us to understand how spaces are configured and the meanings attributed to animals. The need to recognize and value species owned by women is highlighted.
